The Place

Solsken Folk School is a place-based folk school grounded in the tradition of Danish folk education—learning rooted in everyday life, shared skills, and collective responsibility. Located in Wildwood, in qathet (Powell River), our farm sits on the unceded territory of the Tla’amin peoples. Here, our workshops and gatherings are shaped by the land, the seasons, and the people who come together Folk schools emerged as a response to education that separated knowledge from everyday life and confined it to formal institutions. We carry that tradition forward by prioritizing accessibility, widening the circle, and creating space for practical learning, stewardship, and community held in common—for the common good.

The People

We (Aly, Kayley and Sunny) feel incredibly lucky to live and work on this land. The farm, already called Solsken when we arrived, reflects Scandinavian heritage and a little nod to our daughter, Sunny. We are committed to growing, learning, and creating community here—hosting gatherings and workshops that are hands-on, inclusive, and grounded in care for the land and each other.

The Values

Access for All
We believe learning belongs to everyone. No one will be turned away due to lack of funds—scholarships, sliding scale options, and work-trade opportunities are available to ensure everyone can participate. Please reach out to us at solskenfolkschool@gmail.com to discuss a sliding scale, scholarship, or work-trade— we’ll find a way for you to participate.

Fair Compensation for Teachers
Workshop leaders are compensated based on the amount they require. Solsken takes a small, transparent portion of fees to cover operational costs ensuring our teachers are fairly paid and our school remains sustainable.

Giving Back
A portion of Solsken’s annual revenue (5%) is allocated to support Indigenous-led initiatives. We are committed to contributing to the community and honouring the land’s original stewards.
